PREPARACIÓN Y CONSEJOS PARA EL EXAMEN TOEFL

Errores comunes en el TOEFL iBT que deberías evitar (antes y durante el examen)

La clave para obtener una gran puntuación en el TOEFL iBT® es la preparación. Sin embargo, aunque los estudiantes hacen todo lo posible por prepararse, algunos cometen errores evitables en las cuatro secciones (Lectura, Escucha, Expresión Oral y Escritura), lo que acaba bajando su puntuación.

Aquí están los errores más comunes y, lo más importante, cómo puedes evitarlos.

 

1) Estudiar "inglés general" en lugar del examen TOEFL

Aunque tener un buen conocimiento del idioma inglés es crucial para el éxito, es solo una pieza del rompecabezas.

Muchos estudiantes mejoran sus habilidades en inglés viendo películas, memorizando listas de vocabulario y leyendo artículos. Aunque estos te ayudarán a construir una base sólida, también necesitas entender el examen TOEFL iBT.

La prueba tiene tipos específicos de preguntas, reglas de tiempo y criterios de puntuación. Ser bueno en inglés no significa automáticamente que seas bueno en el TOEFL.

Para evitar este error, combina tu aprendizaje general con preguntas al estilo TOEFL. Los exámenes de práctica del TOEFL pueden ayudarte a entender las preguntas más comunes y cada sección, mientras que cronometrar tus sesiones te preparará para condiciones reales del examen. 

2) No practicar bajo condiciones cronometradas

Durante el estudio, es importante sincronizar las sesiones de examen. Una vez que entiendas la estructura de la prueba, completa cada sección usando un temporizador para simular las condiciones reales de la prueba.

Esto evitará que dediques demasiado tiempo a una sola pregunta o sección el día del examen, asegurando que tengas tiempo suficiente para completar el examen sin prisas. Esta práctica también te ayudará a detectar las secciones más débiles, permitiéndote adaptar tu repaso. 

3) No entender la sección de Lectura

Cuando se está en condiciones de examen, es fácil malinterpretar o malinterpretar la sección de Lectura. Antes de completar cualquier respuesta, debes leer y releer la pregunta para asegurarte de que entiendes lo que pregunta.

La clave del éxito comienza en entender en qué te están evaluando.

4) Distraerse en la sección de Escucha

Durante la sección de escucha escucharás una conferencia o conversación, seguida de preguntas sobre el tema tratado. Mientras suena el audio, es fundamental que le prestes el 100% de tu atención. Si te pierdes la idea principal, tus respuestas podrían basarse en conjeturas.

Consejo principal: Practica la toma de notas activa durante la preparación del examen. Concéntrate en anotar palabras clave y temas que escuches a lo largo del texto y que puedas usar en tus respuestas. Cuanto más practiques esta habilidad, más fácil será tomar apuntes el día del examen. 

5) Memorizar respuestas habladas

La sección de expresión oral de tu examen TOEFL está diseñada para ayudarte a mostrar tus habilidades en inglés. Usar plantillas memorizadas o respuestas preescritas disminuirá tu capacidad para mostrar tus habilidades y podría resultar en una disminución de la puntuación cuando los examinadores detecten respuestas memorizadas.

En lugar de memorizar una plantilla exacta, prepara ideas que podrías usar durante tu sección de Oratoria. Aquí, quieres centrarte en la claridad en lugar del vocabulario avanzado. La fluidez y la estructura son más importantes que sonar "inteligente".  

6) Hablar demasiado rápido (o demasiado bajo)

El examen TOEFL está diseñado para darte más que suficiente tiempo para completar tu sección de expresión oral. Evita apresurarte en responder o hablar tan bajo que pierdas la claridad.

Una mala pronunciación o ritmo pueden reducir la comprensión, lo que podría provocar una bajada en tu puntuación global. El día del examen, habla un poco más despacio de lo habitual y haz pausas de forma natural entre tus ideas.

Como parte de tu preparación, grábate y pregunta si tu forma de hablar suena natural. Recuerda, ¡la claridad siempre ganará a la velocidad en la sección de Habla!

7) No tener una estructura de escritura

La sección de Escritura del TOEFL evalúa tu capacidad para crear un argumento coherente en respuesta a una pregunta. Esto requiere organización. Debes evitar escribir párrafos largos sin fluidez y, en su lugar, practicar el uso de una estructura clara de ensayo.

Por ejemplo:

  • Introducción
  • 2 párrafos del cuerpo
  • Conclusión

Asegúrate de ceñirte a una idea principal por párrafo y usa conectores para enlazar tu respuesta.

8) Ignorar la gramática y los pequeños errores

Si quieres conseguir las mejores puntuaciones, entonces debes centrarte en los pequeños detalles. Aunque no perderás puntos por un error ocasional, los errores gramaticales constantes pueden hacer que tu puntuación baje durante las secciones de Oratoria y Redacción.

Para evitar esto, identifica tus principales debilidades gramaticales durante la revisión y trabaja en ellas antes del día del examen. El mismo día, revisa tu escritura si tienes tiempo.

La constancia es más importante que la perfección

El mayor error del TOEFL es prepararse a ciegas. Los que tienen buenas puntuaciones no solo estudian más; Estudian de forma más inteligente. Utiliza tus pruebas de preparación para el TOEFL para identificar debilidades, perfeccionar tu estrategia para el día del examen y entender el momento en que se ajusta.

El objetivo no es la perfección, sino respuestas consistentemente sólidas a lo largo del examen. Concéntrate en la claridad y la estructura mientras practicas bajo condiciones de examen para asegurarte de sentirte al máximo el día del examen.
